In this terrific yarn, Harold’s cousin Elmo inherits a sea chest from his navy captain grandfather, which eventually leads Harold and Elmo (and Elmo’s girlfriend, Irma) to pursue a sunken treasure chest loaded with 60 kilos of cocaine. Rand blends multiple plot twists with a nutty cast of supporting characters, including one who is the spitting image of the now-archaic TV police detective, Kojak.

The action keeps going strong in the second book, in which Harold, Elmo and Irma endure illness and danger as they doggedly pursue Hitler’s lost cocaine, despite being pursued by the law. The climax and epilogue of the story are both satisfying and clever, wrapping up a classic that has never received its just due.

Rand Holmes never tried to disguise his affection (or usage) of illicit drugs in his life or in his comics. But you certainly don’t need to be a cokehead to find enjoyment in this nail-biting adventure, which like Harold Hedd #2 is cinematic in scope, but it provides an even better synopsis for a great buddy flick.“
